The Sons of Amvets Squadron 127 in Ladysmith had the honors in June to present and retire the nation’s colors at the Amvets Department of Wisconsin Convention held in Green Bay.
The privilege marked the first time a non-veteran participated in the ceremony at any state or national Amvets event, according to Squadron commander Dave Roth.
“That is pretty mind-blowing that it is the first time ever,” Roth said.
The non-profit Amvets is a veterans service organization open to all who honorably served. Sons of Amvets is a nationwide service organization comprised of male descendants of American veterans that serve in a support role to Amvets.
The Ladysmith Sons of Amvets organization formed in 2021 and soon grew to include one of the largest, if not the largest memberships in the state. It now counts about 50 members in its ranks.
“A lot of hype was given to the squadron for a job well done,” Roth said. “We didn’t do it for us. We did it for them. We did it for the American veterans.”Roth called it an honor.
“It is a real honor to do this and very humbling for us,” Roth said. “The whole squadron feels that way.”
